Pyramid to Pyramid - 100 years in 100minutes
Update : Check out the diary for a description of the big day on June 29th. Total of over $6200 raised!!!
Mission: Two friends with a combined age of 100 have decided to raise money for the Maadi Childrens Study Centre (MCSC) in Cairo, Egypt by crossing 100 years of history in 100 minutes. Craig Deaves and Chris Marriot will cycle between the Great Pyramids at Giza, back to 2500BC through 100 years of Pharonic history to the older Step Pyramid at Saqqara in over 100degF in under 100 minutes. Craig and Chris will make the journey from Giza to Saqqara on June 29th, in spite of their age and limited cycling experience, and hope to raise a total of $4000. Every dollar or pound you donate will be matched by BP through their matched giving program, so every little helps. Please consider making a donation to this very worthy cause. MCSC is a non-profit school aimed at providing quality education to families in Cairo. They have an urgent need to install computer equipment and a school playground in 2007 and have a range of fundraising activities planned throughout the year to make this a reality. Check them out at www.mceducation.com Remarkably there are only 100 years between the Great Pyramids at Giza and the earlier Step pyramids at Saqqara. Although Saqqara was eclipsed as the burial ground of royalty by Giza and, later, the Valley of the Kings in Thebes, it remained an important complex for minor burials for more than 300 years. The Step pyramid was built for King Djoser around 2667-2648BC and is the oldest hewn-stone building complex known in history. The Great Pyramid at Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza plateau and is the oldest and only surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is believed to have been constructed over a 20 year period around 2560BC. It was the world's tallest building from 2570BC to 1300AD. |
